Government site evaulation
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/index.htm
too much info on one page
Too lazy to look at all
Page doesn’t make me want to read into it more
On this page the only eye catching thing is the act on c02 calculator
It’s a big thing that the government are trying to change but with all the other important things that should be on the website I think that they should all be relatively interesting looking rather than just the mass scrawl of red hyperlinks with the content in black underneath.
Good point short scroll bar
Top choices UK Honor system (Gordon giving them for cash now????)
Frustrating clicked on the cost of vehicle tax link and then had to read a page and then at the bottom is a link to show actual prices.
Much preferred if the link went straight to the actual cost tables and had explanations underneath them.
On the whole I have only seen a small amount of the website but in my opinion it is pretty poor .

ebay mk 2
Ebay is an online auction site
Members upload details of the items which they want to sell onto the ebay database which is continually updated with new information.
It is unique in the fact that it has no high street equivalent whereas such sites as amazon have a highstreet alternative such as waterstones or WHsmiths
There are 2 elements to the ebay system
there is the buying section and the selling section
to actually buy or sell you have to be a member of the site
With the buying part of the site you enter your bid or bids for an item and at the end of the auction the person with the highest bid wins.
You then send the money to the seller through a cheque or paypal (online payment service) or pay cash on picking up the item.
As a seller the roll is reverced and you post the item you would like to sell on the database.
at the end of the set time the highest bidder pays you through the above methods.
you then post off the item to the buyers address.

Explain what is meant by instant messaging email and bulletin boards
Email is the oldest online technology. It is very simple to use essentially a message is sent electronically to a post box on a mail server until an email client picks it up.To email someone it is necessary to be connected to an email server, for example Microsoft outlook express. Messages are usually sent using an SMTP server, a simple mail transfer protocol-port 25, and received by the use of a POP3, post office protocol-port 110, or an IMAP, internet mail access protocol-port 143, server. Email is good as it is simple to use, gives a permanent record of sent and received messages, other files can be attached to the message. Along with these benefits there are some disadvantages to email. It is often misused at a basic level people send inappropriate rude or offensive messages while others spoof others email addresses. Another disadvantage of email is that viruses Trojans and worms can be attached to emails. Spam emails can block up mail boxes and complete areas of the internet entirely.
Instant messaging (IM) is a form of real-time communication between two or more people based on typed text. The text is conveyed via computers connected over a network such as the Internet. Instant messaging requires an instant messaging client such as MSN Messenger. It differs from email as instant messaging is in real time.
Bulletin Boards are exactly what the name says it’s a place for people to leave public messages advertisements, event announcements or provide information.

hwk for ibj (not answers)
Consider the following points on blogs to get you started. Keep some rough notes and screen shot examples. You will need these later.
What is a blog?
How do they work and how does a user ‘use’ a blog?
What sort of blogs exist?
What uses are blogs put to?
What features will you find in a blog?
Why would people other than the original author look at a blog?
What problems might there be with a blog?
Is it possible that blogs might replace other publishing methods on the Net? Explain your answer?
